Help!!

I love blogs, because then I can ask all you wise mothers who have children older than me, or even those of you who just know more than me for help again. I'm going to try to start weaning Brielle soon, but I'm very scared. She chokes on everything!! I gave her a little piece of potato, probably smaller than a cheerio and she starting choking and I thought I had just killed my daughter! She eats baby food really well, it is just transitioning from baby/liquid food to eating normal food?? How do I do that without her choking on every bite? I heard cheerios are good, but I'm thinking that would kill her right off. I think she just tries to swallow things instead of gum or chew them? Any thoughts/suggestions would be very helpful!!

The best advice I can give is to start small. If she's not ready then wait a while. I started with regular apple sauce, banana chunks, gerber stars, and gram crackers. She will choke, it's part of learning how to eat. Just don't leave her alone when she's eating (which I'm sure you already know). Visit wholesomebabyfood.com. They have great ideas. Good Luck.

Ethan hated baby food...he did better on food that I threw in the blender...more real, I guess, and then there wasn't as much transitioning to bigger bites since the taste was the same. Cheerios worked well and I loved graham crackers because they dissolved quickly. I don't know...that's one of those test and learn things...good luck!

Trey use to choke on a lot of stuff. We realized later that we had started him to early on hard foods. Some babies just take longer then others and some just have an over active gag reflex. I liked the gerber stars because they dissolve fast. Also do your mother e's. which for this would be making a really big chewing motion in front of Brielle so she can mimic you. I hope all goes well sorry I'm not more help but parenting is so different for ever kid. love ya Teah

Those little Gerber sars are the best. They seem to be almost the consistency of a cheese-puff. Not cheesy, but they will melt in her mouth. You know what...bad analogy...maybe more like KIX (the cereal). Cheerios are a little more crunchy. I'd let her get the hang of some pretty "melt in your mouth" kind of stuff. You could also start making her baby food a bit more chunky. Is she 1 yet? As soon as Molly turned 1, I fed her oatmeal (the real stuff) with yogurt mixed in.

Hey Shar,
Just dropping a line to let you know there is no baby yet. It should be any day they tell me. Hope life's good and tell Mike hi. Talk with you later.

I agree, those Gerber stars are the best! And, have you tried that YoBaby yogurt? It's made w/ whole milk for babies - I find it at Walmart and Target.

Shar I feel your pain, Addi gags on everything, I will probably be feeding her baby food till she is 5. And she's a puker which compounds the anxiety I have for the transistion to "regular" food. If you find anything that works let me know, the Gerber Stars don't even work for Addi.

cheese puffs - while not terribly healthy, they dissolve SO fast. My friends Doc recommended she start her daughter on peices of those! Or kix - maybe in half since they are kind of big... good luck. We want to see you all soon! We'll be gone the next 2 weekends, but lets get together the end of the mongh.

I don't really have anything to add here--you got a lot of great advice. However, I just wanted you to know I feel like I haven't seen you in forever and I miss coming to see you each month (or so) and I hope you are doing well!!!! Kisses for Brielle.

My niece just had her 9-month check-up today, and my sister called me in a panic because her doctor told her to start Abbie on table food. Not just bread and crackers and cottage cheese-- he suggested things like ribs and baked potatoes. Honestly, I have never heard of such a thing. She has 1 1/2 teeth, too. That should go over REALLY well when her dad takes her.

There are these little net things with a ring on the bottom of them that you can find in stores that might be helpful. You cut up some food, put it in the net, snap it closed and let babies suck and gnaw on the food. It gets soft and sort of smooshes through the net in tiny pieces.

Both Hannah and Anthony used them, and LOVED them. When I read your post, I immediately thought of those.

Alex was a gagger, too. All I can tell you is that they do outgrow it, eventually.
